About us

UBUNTU ART RESIDENCY is nestled in Uganda's historic Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in western Uganda, known as the Pearl of Africa. This vibrant sanctuary offers artists and researchers worldwide an inspiring backdrop of lush ecosystems and diverse wildlife. The residency serves as a creative hub where global artists connect with local communities, sharing traditions and stories while fostering innovation through an interdisciplinary approach.

Our mission at UBUNTU ART RESIDENCY is to support and promote research and artistic creation by adopting an interdisciplinary, intercultural, and intersectoral approach. We facilitate a wide range of creative professionals and researchers by providing a dynamic environment for exploration and collaboration. Our platform offers opportunities for experimentation and exchange, where artists, designers, writers, filmmakers, choreographers, and creators working across disciplines can develop new ideas, push the boundaries of their fields, and collaborate with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds. "Ubuntu," meaning "I am because we are," reflects our interconnectedness and collective harmony philosophy. Here, we emphasize community, shared, and mutual support, encouraging collaboration and a deep connection with nature and each other. We believe creative practice thrives through community, shared knowledge, and mutual support. Artists and researchers who join us engage not only with their projects but with a philosophy that recognizes how our humanity is inextricably bound with others.

Founded by Rosette Kabanyenya Byensi, an artist and researcher pursuing her PhD in interdisciplinary studies, Ubuntu Art Residency embodies her vision of combining participatory approaches, startup strategies, and collaborative leadership to address community challenges through creative practices. Her dedication to women's empowerment is reflected in programs that support female artists and entrepreneurs from local communities, creating meaningful connections between resident artists and local artisans. Rosette's leadership fosters multidisciplinary exploration, inviting creators to discover new intersections between art, technology, environmental stewardship, and community engagement while honoring indigenous knowledge and embracing innovation.

Our program is open to artists, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists, designers, architects, writers, filmmakers, performers, researchers, philosophers, and creative professionals from all backgrounds who are driven by a passion for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.. Here, you'll find a stimulating environment, tailored resources, and a dynamic community ready to enrich your artistic approach. Bring your projects to life and participate in a unique creative adventure!
